Bravery. Sacrifice. Commitment.
That is what Nick Murphy showed and that is the legacy we are following in providing family law legal services for veterans and active duty members of the Armed Forces.
On November 19, 2016, Red Cross Heartland Hero Nicholas J. Murphy saved the life of fellow Navy Seaman, Breona Mackoff Williams, by pushing her out of the way of the speeding motor vehicle that took his life in a tragic accident in Pensacola, Florida. By sacrificing his own life to save hers, Nick was killed. In addition, Nick’s unselfish sacrifice also saved numerous other families by six of his organs being donated successfully to five other gravely ill donor recipients. Nick’s legacy of sacrifice, bravery and commitment continues to inspire others today through the work of the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation. To see his story, play the video below.
The purpose of the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation is to provide free and reduced rate family law legal services to veterans and active duty members of the Armed Forces in Illinois through the Nicholas J. Murphy Military Legal Clinic, to provide financial support to military families through military grants at Christmas, and to provide educational scholarships and financial support to high school and college student-athletes to advance their college and graduate school education, all in honor of our son, Nicholas James Murphy, who was killed on November 19, 2016 while serving in the United States Navy.
We are excited to announce that Nick’s Foundation is growing at a rapid rate and we are going to take it to the next level. In 2019, we will hopefully be hiring full time staff (including veterans) so that we can assist more veterans and active duty members of the Armed Forces. We will be actively seeking corporate and individual donations and grants to allow Nick’s Foundation to become self-sufficient financially and be able to complete more work on a full time basis. In the last 26 months, we are proud to announce we have undertaken 77 cases and completed over $440,000.00 worth of free family law legal services through the Nicholas J. Murphy Military Legal Clinic and through the efforts of the attorneys and paralegals at Murphy & Dunn. Soon we hope to announce the hiring of an Executive Director and a full time legal support staff of one attorney and one paralegal to complete these cases on a full time basis. This year our goal is to raise $250,000.00 to fund these three positions and pay for the small administrative and office costs associated with operating the Clinic.
This past week we met in Chicago with potential donors on a large scale to help get our Foundation running with a full time staff. If we can make that happen, we could represent an unlimited number of veterans and members of the military in their divorce, custody, child support and other family law related cases throughout the State of Illinois. Right now, we simply do not have the ability to expand past the huge number of cases we are doing (approximately 36 cases per year) through the Clinic on a volunteer basis. Thank you everyone for your support.
We have Three major goals at Nick's Foundation:
From the Murphy Family
Thank you everyone for your prayers and support. Our family, friends and the community have all been unbelievably supportive in getting the Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation financially up and running by donating their time, talent and money and supporting his Foundation so we can start helping people who need it most. In this first 26 months since Nick's death, we have raised over $300,000.00 in total pledges, had 184 golfers play in the inaugural 2017 "Fairways for the Armed Forces" golf outing on June 12, 2017, had 188 golfers play in the 2nd Annual 2018 "Fairways for the Armed Forces" golf outing on June 11, 2018, gave out twenty-seven military grants and military financial awards, gave out ten $2,500.00 educational college scholarships for students attending college, have undertaken 77 pro bono and reduced rate family law legal cases and completed over $440,000.00 in free legal work for military families through the Nicholas J. Murphy Military Legal Clinic and through the attorneys, paralegals and staff at Murphy & Dunn, P.C., We have also donated $30,000.00 to Almost Home Kids through the Children's Hospital of Illinois, to the Heller Learning Center for Kids with Cancer, and to the Anthony Rizzo Foundation to help kids with cancer, and have paid out over $52,000.00 through your generous donations to build the Nicholas J. Murphy Memorial Press Box located at Dunlap High School in honor of Nick Murphy. We are giving it back and paying it forward, and the community is responding. All we can say is THANK YOU.
Nick Murphy was a true hero and we are very proud of him. Please help us pay it forward in honor of his life and his legacy.

Fairways for the Armed Forces
The Nicholas J. Murphy Foundation is proud to announce that both the 2017 and 2018 "Fairways for the Armed Forces" golf outings to honor Nick Murphy and to raise money for the military legal clinic, military grants, and educational scholarships were a complete success. Over the course of both golf outings, we raised over $125,000 in net proceeds. The golf outings are held at Mt. Hawley Country Club the second Monday of June each year. The 2018 event was very special because Aaron Bernstein, Nick's actual heart recipient from Nick's organ donation, was the guest of honor and spoke to everyone. Nick would be very proud of everything we are doing in his honor and we are sure he is smiling down from heaven upon us.
WATCH BOTH VIDEOS TO SEE EVERYTHING AT THE EVENTS. WAIT UNTIL THE END TO SEE NICK MURPHY HIMSELF PLAYING GOLF. IT WAS AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER, 2016, WHEN HIS DAD, ED MURPHY, WENT TO VISIT NICK AND THEY PLAYED GOLF. IT WAS THE LAST TIME HE SAW NICK ALIVE AND THE BEST MONEY HE EVER SPENT.
